When it comes to camping, many people think of the basics: pitching a tent, building a fire, cooking hot dogs over an open flame, and card games on picnic tables. While these are all essential activities, they can get a little monotonous from camping trip to camping trip. If you want to add excitement to your camping experience, why not try a few campsite decorating ideas? Make your campsite look good so you can feel good!
There are endless possibilities when it comes to campsite decoration. You can go as straightforward or as elaborate as you want.
All you need is some creativity and a few basic supplies. Fortunately, I’ve put together a list of the best tent camping decorating ideas to help you get started. These RV campsite setup ideas will work for tent campers too, so take note!
Here are 9 of my favorite campsite decorating ideas. I’ve listed them in this table to give you an idea of the cost and difficulty level, however, we’ll get into all of the details in just a moment.

---|---|---|
Pennant flags | $$ | Easy |
Color-changing string lights | $$ | Medium |
Faux palm trees | $$$ | Medium |
Customized flags or tapestries | $$ | Easy |
Rock décor | $ | Easy |
Rugs or campsite mat | $$ | Easy |
Lanterns | $$ | Easy |
Comforter and pillows | $$$ | Medium |
Sun shade sail | $$$ | Hard |
Let’s get into the details of each of these.
Pennant flags to give some color and flair.
Pennant flags are a versatile and affordable way to add color and style to your campsite. You can make them yourself very quickly or buy them pre-made. They’re perfect for adding a pop of personality and color to any camp.
Hang them over your picnic table, from your tent or RV, or on a tree branch. You can even use them to mark your camp’s boundaries or designate specific areas for different activities.
Color-changing string lights.
String lights are another great way to add atmosphere and light to your campsite. They come in all shapes, sizes, and colors to find the perfect set for your needs. They’re perfect for creating a relaxing ambiance and can also be used to mark pathways or tents.
My recommendation and one of my favorite campsite decorating ideas is to get color-changing lights. They create a fun and festive atmosphere and are also great for illuminating your campsite at night based on the mood. Plus, they’re not much more expensive than standard string lights.
In addition to the color-changing lights that can create a fun atmosphere for your campsite, you can also have outdoor neon signs. The custom outdoor neon signs are easy to install, light in weight, and suitable for various outdoor occasions.
Faux palm trees for a tropical atmosphere.
If you want to give your campsite a bit of a tropical flair, consider adding some faux palm trees or other potted plants. These trees are easy to set up and can add some personality to your space.
You can put them wherever you want – on the picnic table, RV patio, or to the entrance of your campsite, the sky is the limit.
Why faux instead of real palm trees? First, they’re much more affordable. Second, they’re easier to transport and set up. Third, they won’t leave behind any mess or debris when you take them down.
Bonus idea: Add some tiki torches or citronella candles to your tropical themed living space. You’ll enhance the ambiance with these inexpensive campsite decorations while also keeping away pesky mosquitoes.
Customized flags or tapestries.
If you want to show your patriotism or team spirit, flags are the perfect way to do it. You can buy flags designed for camping or use any flags on hand. They’re a great way to show your personality and help guests find your campsite.
You can also look into tapestries, which can be hung from trees or tents. They come in various designs, so you’re sure to find one that represents your style.
Keep in mind, though; some RV parks may have restrictions on flags. Be sure to check with the RV park before your next camping adventure.
Rock décor for something different.
When I’m spewing my camping and glamping ideas, I try things that are a little different from the norm. After all, I want my RV campsite to be perfect!
I think that rocks can make for great decoration around a campsite, mainly if you go for some larger ones. They can act as doorstops, rug weights (more on rugs later), or just around your campsite for some pizazz.
However, when I say rocks, I don’t mean just a stone you find on the ground. Go to a local craft store and buy some large, decorative stones. They’ll add a touch of elegance to your campsite that regular rocks can’t provide.
Paint them, wrap them in string lights, or leave them be. Once they’re dazzling, set them on your RV patio or have it grace one of your outdoor rugs (more on those in a minute).
These will make our RV campsite look fun and exciting, so be ready for your fellow campers swing by and compliment your outdoor space.
Rugs or a campsite mat for comfort and style.
Adding an outdoor rug or two to your campsite is a great way to make it more comfortable and inviting. Outdoor rugs not only add some color and style but also help keep dirt and moisture away from your tent or sleeping area.
Plus, they provide some extra insulation on cold nights.
Simply lay out the campsite mat, throw on some camp chairs, and enjoy the great outdoors.
You might think bringing a rug is one of the most outlandish campsite decorating ideas, and that may be true, but who doesn’t love a little luxury when camping?
If you’re going to go for it, make sure to get an outdoor rug that’s easy to clean and transport. There are rugs designed specifically for camping which makes this camping décor idea a no-brainer.
Also, keep it a safe distance from the fire pit. Sometimes the campfire will throw embers and you don’t want to burn your beautiful outdoor rug.
Lanterns for an elegant touch.
Lanterns are a must-have item for any camping trip, especially if camping off the beaten path and want a cozy campsite!
There are many different types of lanterns available on the market, so you’re sure to find one that fits your needs perfectly. They’re perfect for providing light and ambiance and can also be used to ward off insects at nightfall.
You can set it on your campsite table or hang them with your outdoor lights. There are so many options when it comes to these lanterns.
I recommend a citronella lantern for two reasons. First, it will keep mosquitoes away. Second, it will add a touch of elegance to your campsite. Just be sure to get one that’s easy to operate, as you don’t want to be fumbling with a lantern in the dark.
Go the extra mile with a comforter and pillows.
Nothing beats being snug in a cozy comforter and soft pillows when it comes to bedtime. If you don’t want to bring along an entire bedding set, consider packing a comforter and a few pillows instead.
Many RVers already have these packed in their travel trailers to help them stay warm, but for those that don’t, it’ll make your RV feel like home.
This is one of the campsite decorating ideas that will add extra warmth and comfort to your sleeping area and are much easier to transport than a complete bedding set.
Not only are comforters and pillows functional, but they also add a touch of luxury to your campsite.
If you want to take your glamping game up, consider investing in high-quality bedding. It might cost a bit more upfront, but it’ll be worth it when you’re snuggled in bed at night.
Sun shade sail over your picnic table.
A sunshade sail is a perfect solution for campers who want some relief from the sun’s heat without setting up an entire tent canopy. Your campsite will stand out from the rest with this unique addition, and you’ll be able to enjoy your time outdoors without worrying about getting sunburned.
Set it up and kick back with a cold one in your camping chair or hanging hammock.
While you might just think the sun sail is great for day use, you can always hang string lights from the edge of it to make a cozy campsite even at night.
Sun shade sails add style and come in many different sizes and shapes, so you’re sure to find one that fits your needs perfectly. They provide excellent shade coverage, plus they look stylish too! Other campers will definitely ask where you got yours.
